I am a Tucson native, a husband, and father. I am a Christian. Professionally, I am an engineer. My family has been a part of southern Arizona for many decades. We have worked in the mines, helped bring water to our neighborhoods and farming communities, run local businesses, and invested in our pueblos. I attended both Pima Community College and the University of Arizona. During graduate school, I moved to Mexico to teach and learn. I returned home and continued working with folks from all walks of life. These experiences have taught me the value of investing in people.
Statement:
People matter. The landscape of our nation and state has been trending towards collectivism and fractured identity politics, simultaneously. As more dollars are poured into educational institutions, academic standards continue to decrease, along with students’ performance. Current methods and philosophies have replaced time-tested and well-worn paths, only to yield inferior scholastic performance. I believe that parents are responsible for the education of their children – not the government. Look at what the latter has produced in our culture. What we do today affects 10+ generations out. We must not damage nor destroy the future of our families, state, nation, in a myopic attempt to adopt or continue using failing philosophies/methods. Again, people matter. Our children matter. Our educational investment will far outlive this generation.

1. Allowing all parents to use tax credits and publicly funded Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESA) to enable their children to attend any private school, homeschool, or online academy of their choice. | -* | While I support educational liberty, I do not support taxpayer funds being used in any way to provide private education. Rather, remove the tax burden on families who do not utilize public education. Those that want to use government schools should bear the financial responsibility. |
2. Requiring district and charter school officials, including teachers, to inform parents about their child’s social, mental, emotional, or physical health. | S
3. Implementing district and charter school policies to allow students and faculty to use the restroom, locker room, and shower room based on self-identification rather than biological sex. | O
4. Requiring signed permission from a parent before a district or charter school student may participate in any sexuality-related instruction, activities, or clubs. | S
5. Requiring each district and charter school to post online a list of all curriculum and instructional materials being used in the classroom. | S
6. Enacting government regulation of the creed, practices, and curriculum of private schools. | O
7. Requiring government-mandated testing standards for private school and homeschool students. | O
8. Terminating Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) and School Tuition Organization (STO) programs. | -* | I'd prefer that no taxpayer funds be used for private education. I also would like to see families that chose non-public school options to be excluded from any taxes that fund government education. I'd like to share more about why ESA and similar funds are damaging in the long-term. |
9. Permitting ESA homeschool students to participate in public high school athletic programs. | -* | I'm in support of homeschool students participating in public high school athletic programs but would like to educate the ESA participants on the long-term risks in using ESA. Please let me know if you have any questions. |
10. Acquiring parental consent for district and charter school faculty and staff to refer to students by pronouns that do not align with the student’s birth sex. | S* | An individual may be entitled to self-title, but no other individual or institution should be required to endorse such a choice through compulsion. "Acquiring parental consent for school faculty and staff to refer to students by pronouns that do not align with the students birth sex" is ambiguous about any third party being required to address an individual by non-dna based pronouns. Absolutely, parents should be involved with every aspect of their child's education. |
11. Making available books and instructional materials that include sexually explicit images and themes in district and charter school classrooms and libraries. | O |
